He has presented on a National, regional, State and Local levels on diverse topics and issues pertinent to education, special education including attention-deficit disorders, behavioral disorders, behavioral management strategies for parents and teachers, inclusion and integration of children and adolescents with disabilities, independent educational evaluations, lead poisoning and educational competence, learning disabilities, and parental rights under the Individual with Disabilities with Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. After completing advocacy training at the Federation for Children with Special Needs in Boston, she worked as a Special Education Advocate both privately and for a number of organizations, including the Disability Law Center of Boston. Ellen was Executive Director of the South Middlesex Arc (formerly the Association for Retarded Citizens) and served on the Arc of Massachusetts’ Special Education Committee. Ellen is a recipient of the Diane Lipton Award for Outstanding Educational Advocacy on Behalf of Children with Disabilities given by the national Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, and the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly Women of Justice Award. She resides in Pepperell with her husband and teenage daughter who has high functioning autism.

Stephanie Beynon, OTR/L : Introduction to Brain Gym®
A highly effective program that makes learning natural, easy, and enjoyable for all ages and abilities through the use of simple movements that enhance brain function. This workshop is designed to introduce Brain Gym in a playful, active way. Participants will experience the changes that are possible when using movement to facilitate learning. They will learn simple activities to use in their own lives and in the classroom or during therapy sessions. Q&A to follow.

April 26th
Dr. Laurence Hirshberg: EEG Biofeedback Brain Training
This presentation will give an overview of what brain science has to tell us about difficulties with attention, mood, anxiety, social development, and learning, and illustrate with examples how brain mapping clearly reveals the underlying brain problems. He will then explain how to get to the root of these problems by directly training the brain toward improved function through EEG biofeedback. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

(Parent Advisory Council for Education is a resource for support and networking, for parents, guardians, and interested individuals in Somerset concerning children who have special needs, disabilities, and/or learning disorders.

Somerset PACE is a parent run information organization established as a resource for support and networking for parents/guardians and interested parties in Somerset, who have children with special needs, disabilities, or learning disorders. We are working toward the understanding and educational supports for all children with special needs and learning differences in Somerset and our surrounding communities. We welcome anyone interested in learning how to support those with special needs or to share information to attend our meetings. Somerset PACE fulfills the requirement for the Massachusetts State Mandate on PARENT ADVISORY COUNCILS 603 CMR 28.00 Special Education 28.07 Parent Involvement (4) Parent advisory participation. Each school district shall create a district-wide parent advisory council offering membership to all parents of eligible students and other interested parties. The Department of Developmental Services (DDS), together with local Citizen
Advisory Boards and Family Support Centers, wants to hear your ideas about
the future of Family Support services in Massachusetts.

A series of statewide meetings will be held to give families an opportunity
to talk about what they need to support their family member at home and in
their community. We need to hear from you about what’s working, what’s not
working and what’s missing that would make your family’s life better.

It’s critical that we hear directly from you so that a plan for the future
can be developed that really reflects your needs. This is not a
presentation but an opportunity for us to listen to you and learn more about
what you need. We encourage you to attend one of these meetings and make
your voice heard.

FROM TIVERTON AREA
Take 24 North to Exit 3 (Rt. 195 West toward Providence). 195W over the Bragga Bridge to Exit 4B, (Rt. 103E /Wilbur Avenue toward Somerset). Stay straight at the light, and follow Rt. 103E one half mile (.5 mile) to the small rotary. Take the 3rd Exit onto Brayton Avenue. Follow Brayton Avenue for one and a half miles (1.5 miles). Somerset Middle School will be on your left.

FROM THE NORTH
Take 24 South to 79 South. Take the exit for Rt. 6 / Rt. 138 (Veterens Memorial Bridge Westbound) toward Somerset. Bear left at the split, and take a right at the lights at Brayton Avenue. Continue past one set of lights, and the middle school will be on your left hand side.

FROM PROVIDENCE AREA
195 East to Exit 4, (Rt. 103 /Lees River Avenue, Somerset). Take a Right onto Lees River Avenue. At the lights, take a left onto Wilbur Avenue/Rt. 103. The fair and workshop are free and open to the public.

The Community Resource Fair from 5 to 6:30 pm will feature a number of vendors in the local region for children and teens of all ability levels including things that get kids moving, like Wiggle Kids, Teamworks Somerset, Sudbury Adaptive Recreation, Seekonk Recreation, Somerset AIRE, Montella’s Self Defense, Kearney’s American Martial Arts, and USA Karate. Also represented will be community help and service providers such as People Inc., The Fernandes Center, Community Autism Resources, Aspergers Association of New England, Pace Child Care Works and Community Counseling of Bristol County. Information on programs from Somerset and Swansea Public Libraries and tutoring and test preparation services from A Great Place to Learn and Sylvan Learning will also be available.

Most Aspergers children are keenly aware of the social, educational, and environmental expectation that they “fit in” with the crowd. To compensate, they “keep it together” all day long the best they can. Once they return home, many Aspies breathe a sigh of relief, allow their pent-up stress to explode, and meltdown in the safety of the home environment where they feel most comfortable to let down their defenses. This creates a confusing dilemma for educators who report to moms and dads that their youngster “seems fine” during the day. It also creates a frustrating set of circumstances for moms and dads who may internalize their own self-doubts about “something they must be doing wrong” at home. But it is no one’s fault! The Aspergers youngster is simply reacting to the stress-relief that comes with dropping the façade he’s been wearing during seven hours of school time.
