Understanding Developmental Disabilities and Disorders:
Where your child/student should be and how to help them!
Developmental disabilities and disorders refer to disabilities affecting daily functioning in three or more of the following areas: capacity for independent living, economic self-sufficiency, learning, mobility, receptive and expressive language, self-care, and self-direction. The “Pervasive Developmental Disorders” include autism, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified. Children with AS or PDD-NOS have fewer symptoms of autism, and often have less significant delays in their language skill development, but do have difficulty with social skills and other behaviors.
Presented by: Jeannine Audet MD, medical director and full-time member of the professional staff of the Fernandes Center for Children & Families of Saint Anne’s Hospital. A board-certified developmental and behavioral pediatrician, Audet is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School who completed a fellowship in developmental/behavioral pediatrics at Tufts-New England Medical Center. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders.
